Focusing first and foremost on improving
opportunities for student achievement, The Schools Foundation works diligently with each school system to identify
their areas of greatest need.
For example, when technology coordinators from each system informed The
Schools Foundation of the pressing need for distance learning labs in area high
schools, the Foundation located a generous corporate partner, Toyota Motor
Corporation. With tremendous support from Toyota
and other corporate partners that joined the effort, the Foundation was able to
deliver a comprehensive, state-of-the-art Interactive Distance Learning Network
to seventeen area schools. Courses never before offered in certain area schools
are now available through the miracle of interactive distance learning.
Today, The Schools Foundation believes that one of the most pressing needs
of each of its constituent systems is support for technology and professional
development. Both areas are among the last to be adequately funded in good
times, and among the first to be cut in times when money is tight. Educating
students in technology isn't simply a matter of buying more computers. It
requires keeping teachers abreast of advancements in teaching methods critical
to student achievement. The Schools Foundation will continue to identify and
support technological advances and professional development for its teachers,
both targeted toward improving the educational "product" available to
public school students in Huntsville, Madison County
and the City of Madison.
Contributions from The Schools Foundation programs are distributed on a percentage
basis to the three school systems based on average daily enrollment for each
system.
