For Immediate Release September 3, 2008 For more information, contact: Debbie Beaupre, 256.503.3213 Redstone Joins The Schools Foundation to Raise 2008 Impact Aid Participation– More Than $8.5 Million Distributed to Local Schools Over the Past Eight YearsHuntsville, Ala. – At a news conference today, Redstone Arsenal Garrison Commander Col. Robert M. Pastorelli and The Schools Foundation President Scott McLain announced the 2008 Federal Impact Aid Program for local schools. The program disburses payments to local school districts that are financially burdened by federal activities. Children of the 30,000 Redstone Arsenal employees – including military, Department of Defense civilians and contractors – qualify as federally connected students and have helped bring more than $8.5 million to Huntsville City, Madison City and Madison County school systems over the past eight years. Arab City Schools also participate in the program. The process for claiming the aid includes filling out the appropriate forms and turning them back in to the schools so they can be filed. Student populations have steadily increased over the past decade in the North Alabama school systems, and the greatest impacts are in the immediate area around Redstone Arsenal. In addition, local systems are expecting sizable student growth during the BRAC expansion years through 2011. The program is intended to help systems that are financially burdened by federal activities and can be used for a wide variety of expenses including purchasing textbooks, computers and other equipment; after-school programs and remedial tutoring; advanced placement classes; and special enrichment programs. “The Federal Impact Aid Program is very important to our community,” said McLain, president of the board of The Schools Foundation. “It is important for parents to understand this program and fill out the proper forms so we can make sure we take advantage of all funding available to all of our schools." Students were given forms today – Wednesday, September 3. Parents should fill them out and return them as quickly as possible.
