The Schools Foundation and A+ College Ready Bring National AP Program to Local Schools
The Schools Foundation Brings A+ College Ready to 3 Local Schools Systems – Foundation Working with Business Partners to Impact Education for the Future
Huntsville, AL – The Schools Foundation and local business partners announced today that $800,000 has been committed locally to bring the A+ College Ready program to Huntsville, Madison City, and Madison County school systems. A+ College Ready provides a nationally recognized math, science, and English training and incentive program designed to complement school curriculum and strengthen student performance.
Fundraising is underway for the $2 million in local funding needed over the next five years. With a lead commitment from Boeing, and significant support from SAIC, RBC Bank, and nine other local corporations, 70% of the first year’s goal -- $800,000 -- has been committed so far. The Schools Foundation is facilitating the prestigious program by securing needed local funding as well as serving as the liaison with local school leaders.
In partnership with the Governor, the State Superintendent, and others, the A+ Education Partnership received a $13.2 million grant to implement an Advanced Placement* training and incentive program across the state over the next 5 years. The grant was awarded to only six states by The National Math and Science Initiative and is intended to strengthen math and science programs to help America compete in the 21st century global economy. A+ College Ready will invest $2 million in the schools, matching the funds raised locally. High schools in all three systems must apply through a competitive RFP process to qualify for the program.
The Schools Foundation President Scott McLain said, “The A+ College Ready initiative is one of the most exciting programs that we have been able to provide our schools. It is a direct way that our local business base can impact education and help our students be prepared for the future demands of a worldwide workplace.”
A+ College Ready Chairman and a Founder of BE&K Ted Kennedy added, “Huntsville/Madison area businesses have a long track record of supporting K-12 education, and they particularly understand the value of improving student performance in math and science.” He continued, “Their generosity will accelerate improvements in these public schools and open new opportunities for thousands of students.”
