Teachers and Administrators Getting State-wide Attention

Mr. Mercieca and Ms. Graham at the Alabama PTA Convention

At the recent Alabama PTA convention three Huntsville City Schools teachers and one administrator were honored. Ms. Chanel Leslie was named Alabama PTA's Elementary Teacher of the Year. Leslie is a third grade teacher at the Academy for Academics and Arts. Ms. Leslie Graham was named  Alabama PTA's Middle School Teacher of the Year. Graham teaches 8th grade English at Mountain Gap P - 8. Mr. Alexander Mercieca was named Alabama PTA's High School Teacher of the Year. Mercieca teaches Social Studies at New Century Technology High School. Ms. Jennifer Douthit was named Alabama PTA's Elementary Administrator of the Year. Douthit is the Principal at Goldsmith-Schiffman Elementary School.

Two Madison City Schools teachers are among the "Sweet 16" finalists to be recognized as State Teacher of the Year by the Alabama State Department of Education.  Ms. Nancy Brandon is a Kindergarten teacher at Rainbow Elementary School. Ms. Carol Bohatch is a Science teacher at James Clemens High School. The finalists were selected from an applicant pool of more than 140 educators.

The group will soon be narrowed to four, and the 2016-2017 Teacher of the Year will be announced at a ceremony hosted by the Alabama State Board of Education and the Alabama State Department of Education on Wednesday, May 11, at 6 p.m. at RSA Plaza Terrace in Montgomery.  Alabama's Teacher of the Year spends the majority of the school year serving as a full-time ambassador for education and presenting workshops. Alabama's representative also is a candidate for the National Teacher of the Year.


Pam Anderson

Attendance-Social Worker Pam Anderson, who recently won the state's "Be The Change" award. She was one of only three social workers in the state to win. The award honors an individual involved in student services working in public education K-12 who creatively finds solutions regardless of the amount of work involved.
