The Schools Foundation: Speak Up Initiative Receives Endorsement of the Interfaith Mission Service

Huntsville, Ala. – June 8, 2010

The Schools Foundation community engagement initiative Speak Up: A community partnership in support of public education in Huntsville, Madison, and Madison County has received the endorsement of the Interfaith Mission Service (IMS). Speak Up is designed to bring citizens together to talk about the state of local public education and to effect positive change in schools.

Speak Up, a program of The Schools Foundation, is set to launch this fall. Its purpose is to give individuals and organizations -- through a series of neighborhood and community conversations – the opportunity to address what they perceive to be the public schools' strengths, weaknesses, and wishes. The program’s mission is a unified plan to enhance the quality of local education developed through a shared vision, shared responsibilities, and an identification of the resources needed to guarantee the plan's success.

In endorsing Speak Up, the IMS Leadership Council has recommended that the 35 congregations of the cooperative "become informed about the purposes and goals of the Speak Up Initiative and support their efforts to better education in the community.”

The IMS has a rich history of promoting religious, interfaith, cultural, and racial dialogue, while being an advocate for positive change in the Huntsville area.
